The parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the body, slows the heart rate, decreases blood pressure, allows regular digestion and a state of rest and healing, is activated by deep belly breathing.
It took me 27 years to realise that I was breathing the 'wrong' way. As in chest breathing, which in other names is called the stress breathing. The cue is in the name... It was during the antenatal classes with my first pregnancy that I learned that by switching to belly breathing you can actually activate the rest and digest part of the nervous system. It's a game changer!
